The Cantonese opera “The Butterfly and the Red Pear Blossoms” has a remarkable status!
☘ Adapted in 1957 by Tong Tik-sang from the Yuan dynasty playwright Zhang Shouqing's "Xie Jinlian Shi Jiu Honglihua" and the Ming dynasty legend "Hongli Ji".
☘ In 1959, the play was brought to the big screen in a Cantonese opera film starring Yam Kim-fai and Pak Suet-sin. The film was selected as one of the must-see Hong Kong films in the 10th anniversary celebration of the Hong Kong Film Archive.
☘ The film underwent restoration in 2019 and was re-released at the 20th anniversary celebration of Cantonese Opera Day in 2022.

The Butterfly and the Red Pear Blossoms｜Synopsis
Chiu Yu-chau, a talented scholar, and Tse So-chiu, a famous courtesan, had a challenging relationship. They exchanged poems for three years but never met. Prime Minister Wong offered So-chiu to a neighboring kingdom. Yu-chau tried to save her but learned she had died. So-chiu sought refuge with Yu-chau's friend Chai-chi, disguised as Hong-lian. Yu-chau, unaware of So-chiu's identity, left for the capital. So-chiu sought refuge with Wing-sun, who betrayed her to Wong. Yu-chau excelled in exams and investigated Wong. During a ceremony, Yu-chau discovered the truth with So-chiu's help. Wong confessed, and Yu-chau and So-chiu were reunited.
